ALERT 19/11/2019. There is a rather convincing scam being promoted with a phone call ostensibly from British Telecom (BT), that has been referred to us by a member of Neighbourhood Watch today. The caller states that they are calling to advise that there was a problem with the BT internet connection and that unless immediate action was taken then disconnection would follow within 24 hours. The caller urged our member to “Press 1, now!”
Our member recognised the call for what it was, terminated and on subsequent enquiry with their provider (who just happened to be BT) ascertained that the call was indeed bogus. Our member also had presence of mind to dial “1471” revealing the callers number as: 00673066537.
If you receive a phone call from your provider (be it BT or otherwise) and a similar action is requested “DO NOT PRESS A KEY. TERMINATE THE CALL”. It is likely that the number used to connect the call is part of a scam designed to take a fraudulent payment from you.
If you find yourself in a similar position and have concerns, contact your internet account provider later in the day, dialling the contact number you have directly from your phone.
